So i was listening to Nana Boroo’s track “aha yede oh”. And doing my own version of two step azonto mixx Agogo style and couldn’t help but be grateful to God all mighty for my life and that of my fellow kinsmen .I ask what makes and entails happiness in general, what makes a country, city or town a must see destination?, What makes a place so unique to attracts people from all parts of the globe to it, what drives one’s desire to associate solely with a particular group or brand? In this particular case “the Agogo Brand”. And the answer is simple, it is because Agogo as a community is noted for her hospitality, for her peace (never mind what you hear on the radio and the newspapers), for her rapid development and most importantly the personalities who were either been born or raised, or lived and schooled in Agogo in at one point in their lives. Who wouldn’t fall in love with such a town,”bebia wu ama yen”.
Happiness can be seen, felt and appreciated depending on angle from where an observer is standing. Have you asked yourself how many towns can boast of urban status and yet not a district capital in Ghana since the local governance act was passed in 1992. And the answer is one, Agogo, correct answer for three points to the Bontodiase gentleman. Yes Agogo is the only town. Even that my friends is on paper so what more do you need to know, one may ask what about someone who doesn’t know about all these facts, a Ghanaian or a tourist who is visiting Ghana for the very first time what will attract such a person to Agogo instead of the traditional tourist sites and well patronised locations and sites in Ghana? and the answer once again the answer is that all people especially tourist feel comfortable at places where they would be accepted, appreciated and welcomed apart from the site seeings alone. Besides the Hwidiem waterfalls is an experience of a lifetime, the least said about the waterfall the more mysterious and significant it becomes to the outside world. Back in history since the early 1900 to date the basel mission felt so comfortable in Agogo to the extent that they adopted it be a model town for other places in Ghana to emulate.
This has resulted today in the building of a hospital, a teachers training college, a nursing training college and a the latest addition being a university college. All these were developmental agenda the presbyters were able to set for themselves in the long run because of how comfortable and peaceful they felt in Agogo.
So what if Agogo is not a district capital, i am pretty sure that will also change soon when the Asante Akyem central is carved out the existing Asante Akyem North municipality, what happens if Agogo is not the hub of Ghana’s industrial revolution, nothing, there is still abundance of food especially plantain, tomatoes, yams, maize and water melons almost all year round. Perhaps someday soon a factories will be set up to process these produce. Who cares if Agogoains are noted for standing up for their rights, as in the case with the fulani incursion into the land of our ancestor,” abaaa nda ho ma kraman nka nnipa” literally meaning one will not sit idle and watch a dog bite him when he has access to a stick. Agogoains are noted for their ability to express themselves and their opinions on issues that affects them through out their historical life .They were the first to resist Ataara Ofinam, the warlike king who first ruled the land we now occupy. The story of the fulani in sudden appearance and incursion into the lands of Agogo while destroying farm crops in the process did not go down well with most people hence the major uprisings in town. Keep fighting for your rights but violence i believe is not the answer.
And who at all can mention the name Agogo without making reference to certain groups and well individuals in Ghana who were born or raised in Agogo and yet still have special connections and attachments in aAogo. The likes of Abrantee Amakye Dede, Ofori Amponsah, Kofi Bee, Okurasini Samuel, Madfish of yahooya fame, are just but a few of the musicians who were actually born n raised in Agogo, our paramount chief and leader Nana Akuoko Sarpong is a celebrated politician, a lawyer a scholar and a council of state member, Mr. Kwaku Kyei a former inspector general of police and a former council of state member.
The late Kojo Baah Wiredu a former finance minister and member of parliament for the Asante Akyem North constituency, and who can also forget about the current municipal chief executive of the Asante Akyem North constituency Hon. Thomas Osei Bonsu who were all born and raised in Agogo, and there is you and you and me as well as former lectures, bank managers, teachers, businessmen and women and so on and so forth the list is endless, and so is our potential. A potential to be a beacon of hope in the mist of uncertainty and the source of light which directs our path to development.
I am a true son of my land Agogo, the land of my birth and a place i can call home. Now sing along with me as i boogie the night away “mekrom yede oh mekrom yedeooh baabia wu”………………………
